It crushed my soul.
Blaring through the tannoy, the muffled voice announced the train’s arrival on the platform. I boarded the 7:15 AM London Underground train to Canary Wharf, London’s financial district.
My daily commute to my investment banking job in Central London lasted 45 minutes. Judging by the look on fellow zombie passengers’ faces, they felt the same way as me:
Tired, frustrated, and a little desperate.
They didn’t enjoy the long, strained commutes to a corporate job in a stuffy office cubicle either.
I suspected long ago they, like me, sold themselves on the idea [lie] that commuting a few hours a day to a mundane white-collar job was the only way to earn a decent living.
I graduated from university with a degree in international business. I quickly found a job at Goldman Sachs, which suited my goals of using my language skills (I speak six languages) and offered plenty of career opportunities.
Investment banking was prestigious and well-paid. However, I never felt good about working a corporate job.
I felt like I was acting in somebody else’s movie and wasn’t in the lead role. Deep down, I wanted more from life…
One day I was introduced by a mutual friend to Michael, an American in his mid-20s who lived my dream life.
Michael was full of energy and zest for life.
He had an online business, traveled, earned plenty of money, and above all, had full control over his schedule.
Meeting Michael made me reflect on what I truly wanted from life. I found it soul-crushing to work in a corporate environment that stifles your creativity.
After five years of investment banking, I’d had enough.
The pain of not being true to myself, commuting to work every day with fellow zombies who hated their jobs and the meaningless water cooler chitchat became unbearable.
My soul cried out for inspiration, creativity, and freedom.
I had $15,000 in savings in my bank account. I thought it was enough to live off for a few months while I figured out how to make money online.
Two months after I decided to quit my job forever - with nothing lined up - I handed in my resignation to my boss.
Shocked, he urged me to reconsider…
Appeals to reconsider my resignation fell on deaf ears.
I knew if the tables were turned, the bank wouldn’t hesitate to cut me from the payroll anyway.
It was scary to cut the safety net of my corporate job (an illusion). But I felt more empowered than I ever did in my entire life.
Being bold and chasing my dreams made me feel alive for the first time since I had chased my dream to become a professional soccer player as a teenager.
I’ll be honest, my first year in business was rough. I knew nothing about online business or the skills you must learn to become a successful entrepreneur that nobody tells you about.
I slowly watched my bank balance go down, as my expenses rose and my confidence plummeted.
My savings were gone; I maxed out overdrafts and credit cards and even took out a loan.
Every successful entrepreneur takes risks and heavily bets on themselves.
I figured I had to bet on myself too, so I invested heavily in mentorship and coaching.
Within a year, I signed my first client for $1000! After all the doubt about whether I could pull this off, I knew I was gonna make it.
I celebrated like I made a million bucks!
Entrepreneurs love to harp on about adversity and rags-to-riches stories. And challenges and setbacks are part of the game.
Diamonds are forged under pressure after all…
Looking back, I thought I needed crazy, complicated strategies to be successful.
In reality, I needed to develop my confidence, and self-belief, and develop a huge vision for my life.
I hadn’t developed those faculties in the beginning - faculties we all possess - and building a business without them is like driving with the handbrake on.
My experience taught me that if you want a life you love, one that inspires and energizes you, you must create it from the inside out.
If I can do it, so can you…
